18世紀英語で curvet（馬が跳ねる、イタリア語 corvetta 経由でラテン語 curvare「曲げる」から）の変形とされる。馬が弧を描いて跳ねる動作が原義で、そこから人が陽気に飛び跳ね回る意味に転じた。関連語に curve, curvature がある。
Cavort is thought to be a changed form of curvet, a word for a horse's lively leap. That older word came through Italian from Latin curvare, meaning "to bend" or "to curve."
