cripple は古英語 crypel に由来し、ゲルマン祖語の「這う・よろめく」感覚をもつ語根にさかのぼります。接頭辞や接尾辞より語幹そのものが古く、creep が近い同根語です。つまり元は「まっすぐ歩けず這うように進む人」で、そこから「不自由な」の意味が生まれました。
