fascism の語源・成り立ち Etymology

イタリア語 fascismo に由来し、ラテン語 fascis(束ねた棒の束=権威の象徴)が語源。古代ローマで執政官の権力を象徴する儀式用の棒束ファスケスに由来する。関連語: fascinate(魅了する、同根説あり)、fascia(筋膜)。個を束ねて強い権力にするという意味が全体主義思想の名称となった。

Fascism comes from Italian fascismo, the name adopted for the political movement led by Benito Mussolini. Fascismo was based on fascio, meaning a group or bundle, ultimately from Latin fascis. The related Roman symbol, the fasces, was a bundle of rods, often surrounding an axe, carried as an emblem of official authority. The term consequently joined the imagery of unity and collective strength with centralized political power.
