hachiman の語源・成り立ち Etymology
日本語「八幡(はちまん)」に由来。「八」は数の八、「幡」は旗・幟を意味し、「八つの幡」が原義。応神天皇の誕生時に八つの旗が立ったという伝承に基づく。八幡宮(武神)として全国に広まり、英語でもそのまま Hachiman と表記される。
Hachiman is the romanized form of Japanese 八幡, literally composed of the characters for “eight” and “banner.” Traditional explanations connect the name with eight banners said to have appeared at Emperor Ōjin’s birth. The deity’s cult spread widely through Hachiman shrines and became especially important to warrior families. English borrowed the Japanese proper name directly rather than translating it as a descriptive title.
