古英語 hæfen（港）から。古ノルド語 hǫfn（港）とも同源で、ゲルマン祖語 *habnō（つかむ場所）に遡る。関連語: harbor（港）、Copenhagen（商人の港）。船を「つかまえる＝安全に留める」場所が原義で、そこから避難所の意味に広がった。
Haven comes from Old English haefen, meaning "harbor" or "port." It is related to Old Norse hǫfn and goes back to a Germanic root meaning a place that holds or receives something. The idea was a place where ships could be safely held, and from there the meaning widened to a safe place or refuge.
