ironic は後期ラテン語 ironicus を経て、ギリシャ語 eironeia「とぼけ・見せかけの無知」に由来します。eirōn は「しらを切る人」で、語尾 -ic は「〜に関する」。つまり ironic は、本心を隠して逆のことを言う感じから「皮肉な」になりました。関連語は irony, ironical。
