覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
league はラテン語 ligare「結ぶ」にさかのぼり、共通目的で「結ばれた集団」が基本イメージ。スポーツでは複数チームをまとめる競技団体や試合体系を指し、join a league、play in a league、the league has ten teams の形で覚える。単なる一試合ではない。
Think of a league as separate teams or members “linked” together for a shared purpose. In sports, it is the organized competition that contains multiple teams, rules, standings, and a schedule, not one individual match. Useful patterns are join a league, play in a soccer league, win the league, and the league has ten teams. The older idea of an alliance also survives in names for organizations formed by people or states with a common aim.
例文

league の語源・成り立ち Etymology
ラテン語 ligare(結ぶ)から古フランス語 ligue を経て英語に。元は「結びつき・同盟」の意味で、同じ目的で結束した集団を指す。関連語: ligament(靱帯)、oblige(義務づける)。「結ばれた仲間」が転じて競技連盟の意味に。
League entered English through French ligue and ultimately relates to Latin ligare, meaning “to bind” or “to tie.” Its earliest central idea was a binding alliance among people, groups, or states. From that sense of organized association, the word developed its modern sporting meaning: a collection of teams bound by common rules, schedules, and competition. Ligament is a related word built on the same idea of binding.
