migratory は migrate に形容詞語尾 -ory が付いた語で、ラテン語 migrare「移動する・住み替える」にさかのぼります。だから「渡りの」は、ただ動くのでなく“場所を変えていく性質”を表す語だと納得できます。関連語はmigration、immigrate。
Migratory comes from migrate plus the adjective ending -ory. Migrate goes back to Latin migrare, meaning "to move" or "change one's dwelling place."
