Obstinacy is the quality of being very stubborn and unwilling to change your opinion or behavior. It is usually used in a negative way when someone refuses to listen, cooperate, or accept advice.

「obstinacy」は obstinate「頑固な」+ -acy で、さらにラテン語 obstinare に由来します。ob-「向かって・逆らって」+ stare「立つ」が核で、state や obstacle も同根。文字どおり“その場に立って譲らない”感覚が、頑固さという意味を作っています。
