ラテン語 obstinare「踏ん張って動かない」が語源で、ob-「向かって」＋ stare「立つ」に分けられます。stable や status と同じ stare 系で、「その場に立ち続ける」イメージから、考えを曲げない頑固さが生まれました。
Obstinate comes from Latin obstinare, meaning "to stand firm" or "persist." It can be divided into ob- and stare, "to stand," the same root seen in stable and status. The sense developed from physically standing one's ground to mentally refusing to change. That is how it came to express stubborn firmness.
