The past-tense and past-participle form of referee, also used adjectivally. In sports, it describes a match or game supervised and judged by an official referee. In academic contexts, it describes work that has been evaluated by expert referees before publication.

覚え方のコツ Memory Tip

原形 referee に規則的な -ed が付いた過去形・過去分詞です。語末の ee を保って refereed と綴り、-ed は /d/ と発音します。a refereed match なら「審判された試合」、a refereed article なら「専門家による査読を受けた論文」です。

Begin with referee and add regular -ed, retaining the final double e; the ending is pronounced /d/. In a refereed match, an official applies the rules and judges play. In a refereed article or journal, experts evaluate academic work before publication, so this use is close to peer-reviewed.

refereed の語源・成り立ち Etymology

ラテン語「referre」(re-=再び+ferre=運ぶ)から派生した「referee」(審判)の過去分詞形。原義は「判断を差し戻す人」で、転じて審査・判定を受けたの意。関連語にreference(参照)、transfer(移す)がある。

Refereed is the regular past-tense and past-participle form of the verb referee. Referee developed from refer plus the personal suffix -ee, originally denoting a person to whom a matter was referred for a decision. Refer ultimately comes from Latin referre, “to carry back or report.” The noun became established for an official judge in sports, and the verb consequently came to mean acting as that official.
