ラテン語 re-（強意）+ paenitēre（後悔する）からフランス語 repentir を経て英語に。paenitēre は poena（罰・苦痛）と関連し、penal（刑罰の）やpain（痛み）と同根。罰の痛みを感じ悔いるのが原義。
