覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
原形 repent に三人称単数現在の -s が付いた形で、he、she、the character などを主語にする。語末 /t/ が無声音なので -s は /s/ と発音し、「リペンツ」に近い。単に regret「後悔する」より、過ちや罪を認め、態度や生き方を改めようとする意味が強く、repent of a sin や repent and seek forgiveness が典型。
Repents is the base verb repent plus the third-person singular present ending -s, used in sentences such as “he repents” or “the character repents.” Since the base ends in the voiceless sound /t/, the ending is pronounced /s/. Distinguish repent from simply regret: regret may describe sadness about an outcome, while repent often includes acknowledging moral wrongdoing and intending to change. Typical patterns include repent of a sin, repent for past actions, and repent and ask for forgiveness.

repents の語源・成り立ち Etymology
ラテン語 re-(強意)+ paenitēre(後悔する)からフランス語 repentir を経て英語に。paenitēre は poena(罰・苦痛)と関連し、penal(刑罰の)やpain(痛み)と同根。罰の痛みを感じ悔いるのが原義。
Repents consists of repent and the third-person singular ending -s. Repent entered English through Old French repentir and is ultimately connected with Latin paenitere, “to cause regret” or “to make sorry.” That Latin family is associated with ideas of penalty and suffering. In English, the verb developed the strong moral and religious sense of feeling remorse for wrongdoing and changing one’s course.
