sanity は古フランス語 sanité を経て、ラテン語 sanitas「健康・健全さ」に由来します。語根 san- は sanus「健康な」で、もとは体の健やかさが中心でしたが、そこから心にも広がって「正気」になりました。関連語は sane、insane。
Sanity comes through Old French sanité from Latin sanitas, meaning "health" or "soundness," from sanus, "healthy." At first the idea was general health and wholeness. Later it was used especially for mental soundness, which links it to sane and insane.
