spurn は古英語 spurnan「足で蹴る・追い返す」に由来し、さらにゲルマン祖語をへて印欧祖語の「足首・かかと」にさかのぼる。つまり本来は足で蹴って遠ざけることなので、そこから「拒絶する」の意味になった。関連語は spur、spoor。
