Staccato was borrowed from Italian staccato, literally “detached” or “separated,” the past participle of staccare, “to detach.” The Italian verb developed from a form related to French détacher and English detach. The musical term therefore describes notes detached from their normal full length and from adjacent notes. English later extended the same image to abrupt, disconnected patterns of speech, sound, and movement.
