Submissiveness is the quality of being too willing to obey or accept the control of others. It is often used when talking about behavior, personality, or relationships. The word can be neutral in some situations, but it often suggests weakness or lack of independence.

submissiveness はラテン語 submittere 由来で、sub-「下に」＋ mittere「送る」から成る submit に、-ive と -ness が重なった語です。自分を相手の下に置く感覚が、「従順さ・おとなしく従う性質」につながります。関連語は submit, submission。
Submissiveness comes from submit, which goes back to Latin submittere: sub- "under" plus mittere "to send." The original image is of placing or sending something under another's control. With the added endings -ive and -ness, it came to express the quality of yielding or placing oneself below someone else, and it is closely related to submission.
