underway は under way という航海語からできた語で、船が way「進み・航行の勢い」に乗っている状態を表した。under は単なる「下」ではなく、オランダ語 onderweg の影響も受けた表現とされ、そこから一般に「進行中」の意味になった。関連語は way, roadway。
Underway comes from the phrase *under way*, first used in sailing. In that setting, *way* meant forward movement or the motion of a ship, and the expression may also have been influenced by Dutch *onderweg* "on the way." It later broadened from ships in motion to the general meaning "in progress."
