unsold は un-「〜ない」+ sold「売られた」で、sold の元の sell は古英語 sellan「渡す・与える」にさかのぼります。sale や seller も同じ系列の語で、買い手にまだ手渡されていない品だという発想が、そのまま「売れ残り」を表しています。
