To urge someone means to strongly advise, encourage, or push them to do something. It is often used when someone feels an action is important or should happen soon. The word suggests strong pressure, but not always force.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
urge は、ただ「すすめる」recommend より圧が強く、今すぐ動いてほしい感じがある語。動詞では urge A to do「Aに〜するよう強く促す」、名詞では an urge to...「〜したい衝動」でよく出る。urgent（緊急の）と形が近いので、「切迫感があって相手を動かす」とまとめると覚えやすい。encourage が前向きに後押しする語なら、urge はもっと強めに迫る語。使用場面は urge caution, urge reform など。
Connect urge with urgent: both carry pressure and a feeling that action should happen soon. Urge is stronger than simple recommend or encourage, so think of pushing someone firmly. It is useful to remember both patterns together: urge someone to do something and an urge to do something.
