conjure はラテン語 coniurare（ともに誓う）→古フランス語 conjurer 由来。con-「共に」+ jurare「誓う」で、神や霊を誓いの言葉で呼び出す感覚から「魔法で現す」へ進んだ。jury や perjure も同じ jur- を含む。
