detainer は detain + -er。detain は古フランス語経由でラテン語 detinere にさかのぼり、de-「離して」+ tenere「つかむ、保つ」から、原義は「引き留める」です。retain や tenant と同根で、相手を留め置く感覚が「拘留命令」につながります。
