fearful は fear＋-ful「〜に満ちた」から成る語です。fear は古英語 fær「危険、災い」に由来し、もともとは「恐れ」より先に「脅かす危険」そのものを指しました。fearless、frightful と比べると、「恐れを感じさせる／恐れでいっぱい」の両感覚がつかめます。
Fearful is formed from fear and the suffix -ful, meaning "full of." Fear comes from Old English faer, which originally referred more to danger or sudden harm than to the feeling itself. Over time, the word moved from the threat outside to the feeling inside, so fearful could mean either full of fear or causing fear.
