To infer means to reach a conclusion from facts, signs, or information, even if it is not directly stated. It is often used in reading, discussion, and logical thinking. You infer something by using clues and reasoning.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
infer は、文中のヒントや事実を見て「そこから結論を出す」語。自分が読み取る側だと覚えると定着しやすいです。よく比べるのは imply で、こちらは話し手が「それとなく示す」側。相手が imply し、聞き手が infer する、という組み合わせで整理すると混同しにくくなります。ニュースや読解では infer from the data のように from 以下の根拠つきで出やすいので、証拠ベースの推測だと押さえると使い分けやすいです。
Remember the pair `imply` and `infer`. A speaker `implies`, but a listener or reader `infers`. That contrast is the best memory hook: one person gives hints, the other draws a conclusion from them.

infer はラテン語 inferre に由来し、in-「中へ」+ ferre「運ぶ」が合わさって『中へ持ち込む』が原義です。事実を頭の中へ運び込んで結論にする感覚から『推測する』となり、refer や transfer にも同じ ferre の『運ぶ』が生きています。
Infer comes from Latin inferre, made from in- 'into' and ferre 'to carry.' The older idea was 'to bring in' or 'carry into.' In English, this developed into the mental sense of bringing facts into the mind to reach a conclusion; refer and transfer share the same root ferre.
