象嵌とは、異なる色や材料の小片を木製または他の材料の表面に埋め込んで、装飾的なパターンを作る技法です。高度な手工芸の一形態です。
An inlay is a piece of material set into the surface of another object as decoration or part of the design. It is often made of wood, metal, stone, or another contrasting material, and is common in furniture, jewelry, and art.

lay=置く を知っていれば、inlay は『中にはめ込んで置くもの』とイメージすると残りやすい。表面に色を塗る paint や模様を印刷する print と違い、木や金属の表面を少し削り、別素材をぴたりとはめて模様を作る感じが inlay。overlay が上に重ねるのに対し、inlay は中に埋め込むので方向が逆。wood inlay, ivory inlay のように、工芸品や家具の装飾の場面と一緒に覚えると定着しやすい。
