ラテン語 insolens に由来し、in-「〜でない」+ solere「慣れている」から成る語です。原義は「ふだんの節度に慣れていない」「常軌を逸した」で、そこから無礼で見下したような「横柄な」へ進みました。obsolete も同じ solere の系統にあります。
Insolent comes from Latin insolens, based on in- and solere, "to be accustomed." Its earlier sense was something like "unusual" or "not following normal restraint." From that, it came to suggest rude, overbold behavior, and it is distantly related to words from the same root such as obsolete.
