Sabe is a nonstandard or code-switching use based on Spanish or Portuguese forms of the verb meaning “to know.” It may be used informally in mixed-language speech, but standard English normally requires know or understand instead.

Treat sabe as a borrowed or code-switched form, not as a regular standard-English verb. In Spanish, sabe is a present-tense form of saber and means “he knows,” “she knows,” or formal “you know”; Portuguese has a closely related form. Link saber with Latin sapere, whose meanings developed from tasting or discerning toward knowing and wisdom. This connection also helps with words such as sapient. In normal English, choose know or understand: say Do you know what happened? rather than Do you sabe? Also avoid adding English -s to create sabes, because that mixes two different conjugation systems.
