sombre はフランス語 sombre に由来し、さらに俗ラテン語 *subumbrare（影を落とす）にさかのぼると考えられます。sub-「下に」+ umbra「影」が背景にあり、「影に包まれた」感覚から「薄暗い」「陰鬱な」へ発展しました。関連語に umbrella, umbrage。
Sombre came into English from French sombre. It is thought to go back to a Vulgar Latin form related to sub- "under" and umbra "shadow." The sense moved from being under shadow to meaning dark, muted, or emotionally gloomy; umbrella and umbrage share the same shadow root.
