解説 Definition
穀物などの種を地面に植えることです。種子を土に埋め込んで成長させるプロセスを指し、また比喩的には何かの基盤を作ることにも使われます。
To sow means to plant seeds in the ground so that crops or flowers can grow. It is also used in a more abstract way for causing something to develop, especially over time.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
seed を土に広げる動作そのものだと結びつけると覚えやすい語です。まずは sow seeds をひとまとまりで覚え、そこから sow doubt, sow confusion のように「あとで広がるものの種をまく」という比喩へ広げると定着します。反対側には reap（刈り取る）が来やすく、sow and reap の対でも整理できます。発音は /soʊ/ で sew と同音異綴なので、縫う sew と混同しないこと。plant は苗や木を植える感じ、sow は種をまく感じです。

古英語 sawan「種をまく」に由来し、さらに印欧祖語 *sē-「まく」へさかのぼります。seed や season と同根で、ばらまいて育ち始める感覚が核です。だから sow は種まくだけでなく、考えや争いを『広める』意味にも伸びました。
Sow comes from Old English sawan and goes back to an Indo-European root meaning "to scatter seed." It is closely related to seed. From the literal act of planting seeds in the ground, the word later grew into figurative uses such as spreading ideas, fear, or conflict.
