alight「降りる」は中英語 alighten、さらに古英語 alīhtan にさかのぼり、a-「離れて・下へ」+ līhtan「軽くする」が核です。lighten や light も同根で、馬や乗り物から降りると“荷を軽くする”感覚から「降りる」の意味になりました。
Alight in the sense of "get down" goes back to Middle English and Old English forms built from a prefix and a root meaning "make light." It is related to lighten and light. The original idea was making a horse or vehicle lighter by getting off it, and that became the regular meaning "descend" or "step down."
