carnation の語源・成り立ち Etymology

ラテン語caro/carnis(肉)に由来し、花の肉色(ピンク色)から命名された。coronation(戴冠)と混同されやすいが語源は別。carnal(肉体の)やincarnation(受肉・化身)と同根で、「肉の色をした花」が原義。

Carnation entered English through French, with its name traditionally associated with Latin caro, genitive carnis, meaning flesh, and with words referring to a flesh-colored complexion. The connection reflects the pinkish color of familiar varieties of the flower. Carnal and incarnation contain the same Latin root relating to flesh. Despite its similar spelling, coronation, meaning the crowning of a monarch, has a different origin.
