"Cherub" came into English through Latin and Greek, from Hebrew "kerubh." In early religious use, it referred to a powerful heavenly being close to God, not mainly the small cute angel image common today. The older plural form "cherubim" is still used, and "cherubic" later developed the softer, childlike sense.
