cherub は、天上の存在を表すヘブライ語に由来し、ギリシャ語とラテン語を経て英語に入った。古い宗教的な指示対象は、後世の美術で一般的になった翼のある幼子の姿と必ずしも同じではない。
Cherub ultimately comes from a Hebrew word for a heavenly being and entered English through Greek and Latin. Its older religious referent was not necessarily identical to the winged child figure later made familiar by art.
