devil の語源・成り立ち Etymology
ギリシャ語 diabolos（中傷する者）が語源で、dia-（横切って）+ ballein（投げる）から成る。「言葉を投げつけて誹謗する者」が原義。ラテン語 diabolus → 古英語 deofol を経て devil に変化した。関連語: diabolical（悪魔的な）、slander（中傷）も類似概念。
From Greek diabolos, meaning "slanderer" or "accuser," from dia-, "across," and ballein, "to throw." It passed through Latin diabolus and Old English deofol before becoming devil. The original idea was someone who throws words against another person, and this developed into the religious sense of an evil being.
