ギリシャ語 diabolos（中傷する者）が語源で、dia-（横切って）+ ballein（投げる）から成る。「言葉を投げつけて誹謗する者」が原義。ラテン語 diabolus → 古英語 deofol を経て devil に変化した。関連語: diabolical（悪魔的な）、slander（中傷）も類似概念。
