糸やロープなどが複雑に絡み合う。また比喩的に、人間関係や法的問題などの複雑な状況に巻き込まれることを意味する。
To entangle means to twist or catch things together so that they are difficult to separate. It can also mean to involve someone in a complicated, troublesome, or emotional situation.

tangle（もつれ）を知っていれば、entangle は「何かをもつれ込ませる／もつれに巻き込まれる」と捉えると覚えやすい。まずは cords get entangled のように、糸・コード・髪が物理的に絡む絵を頭に置く。そのうえで be entangled in legal trouble, an entangled relationship のように、法的問題や人間関係が複雑にこじれる比喩へ広げる。単なる involve より「抜けにくいもつれ」の感じが強い。untangle（ほどく）と対で覚えると定着しやすい。

entangle は en-「中へ・〜にする」+ tangle「もつれ」からできた語で、tangle は古ノルド語系の「絡む」語に結びつけられます。tangle や untangle も同根で、核は「線や関係が入り組むこと」です。だから糸だけでなく事情まで「もつれさせる」意味に広がりました。
Entangle combines en- with tangle. Tangle is probably connected to older Scandinavian words about twisting or knotting together. The basic image was physical twisting, but the word later widened to cover complicated situations and relationships as well. Related English words include tangle and untangle.
