中英語fikel、さらに古英語ficol「人をだます・油断ならない」に由来します。語幹はfike「ごまかす」と結びつき、もとは「当てにならない人」の感じ。そこから「気分や態度がころころ変わる」へ広がり、関連語にfikeとfoeがあります。
