中毒者とは、特定の物質、習慣、または活動に深く依存している人を指します。中毒性のあるもの（薬物、ゲーム、趣味など）に対する強い執着や依存症を持つ人物を意味し、その対象から抜け出すことが難しい状態を表します。
A fiend is someone who is extremely interested in or addicted to something. In modern informal use, it often means a person who cannot get enough of a particular activity or thing. In older or stronger use, it can also mean a cruel or evil person.

fiend は fan よりかなり強く、addict に近い「それなしではいられない」ほどの熱中・依存を表す語。a fiend for coffee / a gambling fiend のように for と結びつきやすいので、「for の後ろに来るものに取りつかれている人」と覚えると残りやすい。まず「悪魔みたいに強烈な人」という語感を置き、その強さが『あるものに取りつかれた人』→『中毒者』へずれると考えると整理しやすい。friend と綴りが似るが意味は正反対なので要注意。
Be careful: `fiend` looks a bit like `friend`, but the meaning is much more intense. A `fiend for coffee` or `fiend for bargains` is someone who cannot resist that thing. Remember the common pattern `a fiend for ...`.
