fiendは古英語feond「敵・憎む者」に由来し、動詞feogan「憎む」の現在分詞が名詞化した語です。archfiendやfiendishも同根で、「悪魔」というより本来は「人に害をなす敵」が芯にあるとわかると、意味の強さが腑に落ちます。
