A gangway is a movable bridge or ramp used for getting onto or off a ship, airplane, or similar vehicle. It is used in travel and transport contexts. In some varieties of English, it can also mean a narrow passage between rows of seats or shelves.

gangway は gang と way に分けて見ると覚えやすい。way はもちろん「道」。gang は今は「集団」の意味でよく出るが、ここでは『人がまとまって進む感じ』を手がかりにして、「人が通るための細い道」を思い浮かべるとよい。passage や corridor よりも、船・飛行機・列車などに乗り降りするための“接続通路”という場面が強い。船に渡す板や乗降口前の通路を映像で結びつけると定着しやすい。
