インターセプト

解説 Definition

intercepts は intercept(途中で捕らえる・妨げる)の三人称単数現在形です。パスや通信などが目的地に届く前に、途中で捕らえたり止めたりすることを表します。

Intercepts is the third-person singular present form of intercept. It describes a person, system, or other agent stopping, catching, or taking something while it is traveling toward its intended destination, as with a pass, ball, message, or communication.

使い方 Usage

  • he、she、the defender、the system など、三人称単数の主語で現在の動作を述べるときに intercepts を使います。 Use intercepts for present-tense actions with third-person singular subjects such as he, she, the defender, or the system.
  • intercepts a pass(パスを奪う)、intercepts a message(メッセージを途中で捕らえる)のように、対象を目的語に置きます。 Put the intercepted object after the verb: intercepts a pass or intercepts a message.

覚え方のコツ Memory Tip

inter-「間に」と「捕らえる」を結び付け、パスや通信の進路に入り込む場面を想像しましょう。語末の /t/ の後に付く -s は /s/ と発音します。

Connect inter-, “between,” with the idea of catching something on its way to a destination. Picture someone stepping into the path of a pass or message. The ending -s after /t/ is pronounced /s/.

例文

The defender intercepts the pass near the goal.

守備選手がゴール近くでそのパスをインターセプトします。

The system intercepts suspicious messages before they reach users.

そのシステムは不審なメッセージが利用者に届く前に受け止めます。

intercepts の語源・成り立ち Etymology

ラテン語 intercipere(途中で捕らえる)が語源。inter-(間に)+ capere(捕らえる)の構成。関連語:capture(捕獲)、reception(受容)。移動中のものを途中で「間に入って捕らえる」が原義で、通信の傍受やスポーツのパスカットにも使われる。

Intercepts consists of intercept plus the third-person singular present ending -s. Intercept comes from Latin intercipere, “to seize in passing or interrupt,” formed from inter-, “between,” and capere, “to take or catch.” It entered English through Latin and later French influence. The original image of taking something while it is between its starting point and destination remains clear in modern uses involving sports passes, communications, signals, and moving objects.
