irreversible は ir-「不」+ re-「後ろへ」+ vers + -ible から成り、ラテン語 vertere「向きを変える」にさかのぼります。reverse や convert も同根で、いったん向きが変わると元へ返せない、という構図が「不可逆的な」をそのまま説明します。
Irreversible is built from ir- "not," reversible, and ultimately Latin vertere, meaning "to turn." Reversible originally carried the idea of being able to turn back.
