phrasal_verb

明かすあかす

解説 Definition

(秘密や情報を)明かす、漏らす。「Don't let on」のように否定形で『口外しない』の意味でもよく使われる。

To reveal or admit something, often only partly or unwillingly. It is commonly used in negative forms, such as when someone does not let on about a secret or feeling. The phrase often suggests hidden knowledge.

覚え方のコツ Memory Tip

let はまず「許す・出させる」の基本感覚で押さえ、let on は「内にある情報が表に出るのを許す」と考えると覚えやすいです。単なる tell より、秘密をうっかり漏らす・それとなく気づかせる場面に合います。let out に近いですが、let on は相手に“知られてしまう”ニュアンスが残りやすい語。よく否定で Don't let on. として使われ、「口外するな」「気づかれるな」という形でセットで覚えると定着します。

Think of `let` as allowing something to come out. In `let on`, the thing that comes out is hidden information, often a secret. It is often used in the negative, as in `Don't let on`, which helps fix the phrase in memory.

例文

Don’t let on about the surprise party until Saturday.

土曜日までサプライズパーティーのことは誰にも漏らさないで。

She never let on that the project was hard.

彼女はそのプロジェクトが大変だったことを決して明かさなかった。

I knew where the key was hidden, but I didn't let on.

私は鍵がどこに隠されているか知っていたが、それを明かさなかった。

ふりをする

解説 Definition

事実ではないのに、本当であるかのように振る舞うときの表現。特に like や as if を伴って、相手をだましたり、その場を取り繕ったりするために、知らない顔をしたり平気そうに見せたりする場面で使う。やや口語的で、実際の気持ちや状況とのずれを含む。

To do this is to behave as though something untrue were actually true, often to deceive someone or hide the real situation. It commonly appears with that, like, or as if and has an informal tone.

覚え方のコツ Memory Tip

let on は「外に出す」だけでなく、口語では「そうであるかのように見せる」と覚えると、この語義に合います。let on that he didn't hear なら、本当は聞こえていたのに「聞こえなかったことにする」感じです。秘密を明かす意味と混同しやすいですが、この行では情報を漏らすのではなく、事実と違う様子を表に出して相手に信じさせる「ふりをする」です。

Think of putting a false appearance on display for other people to see. For example, someone may act as if they did not hear or were asleep even though the opposite is true; keep this sense separate from revealing secret information.

例文

He let on that he didn't hear the question, even though he had.

彼はその質問が聞こえなかったふりをしたが、実際は聞いていた。

The child let on that he was asleep when his mother came in.

母親が入ってくると、その子は眠っているふりをした。

They let on like nothing was wrong during dinner.

彼らは夕食の間、何も問題がないふりをした。

let on の語源・成り立ち Etymology

let は古英語 lǣtan(許す、させる)から。on は古英語 on(上に)から。「~の上に出させる」が原義で、秘密を外に出す→明かすという意味に発展した。letには「許容する」の核があり、情報を外に漏らすことを許す含意がある。関連語:let out, onset。

"Let" comes from Old English "laetan," meaning to allow or let go, and "on" comes from Old English "on." In "let on," the idea developed into allowing something hidden to come out or become known. It is closely related in sense to "let out," both carrying the idea of releasing information.
