Marginalisation is the process of pushing a person or group to the edge of society or a discussion, so they have less power, importance, or opportunity. It is often used in social, political, and cultural contexts.

marginalisation は marginal + -isation。marginal は後期ラテン語 marginalis「縁の」、さらにラテン語 margo「端・境界」にさかのぼり、margin も同根。もともと「端に追いやる」感覚なので、社会の中心から外して疎外化する意味になる。
Marginalisation comes from marginal plus the suffix -isation. Marginal goes back through Late Latin marginalis to Latin margo, meaning "edge," "border," or "margin." The original image is of moving something to the edge, and this later became the social sense of pushing people or groups out of the center. A close related word is margin.
