ファンタジー語彙では、goblin は elf や fairy のような美しい妖精ではなく、「小さくて意地悪、こそこそ現れる厄介者」の側に置くと覚えやすいです。monster だと大きすぎ、demon だと強大すぎるので、その中間よりもむしろ“小型でずる賢い小鬼”という位置づけ。goblin cave, goblin army のように、暗い場所・群れ・襲撃と結びつけると定着します。orc と近いですが、goblin のほうがより小柄で、卑怯・いたずら好きなニュアンスが強めです。gremlin とも混同しやすいですが、gremlin は機械トラブルを起こすイメージで覚えると区別しやすいです。

goblin は古フランス語 gobelin、さらに中世ラテン語 gobelinus にさかのぼる語です。ドイツ語 Kobold と同系とされ、「いたずら好きな地下の精」というイメージが英語でも受け継がれ、小鬼・ゴブリンの意味に定着しました。関連語は kobold, cobalt。
"Goblin" came into English from Old French "gobelin," which goes back to Medieval Latin "gobelinus." It is thought to be related to German "Kobold," the name of a mischievous spirit. The sense stayed fairly close as it moved into English: a small, troublesome supernatural creature.
