Polarize means to divide something into two very different and opposing sides. It is commonly used for opinions, politics, and social issues when people strongly disagree. In science, it can also mean causing light, electricity, or particles to behave in a particular directional way.

polarize は polar + -ize で、polar は pole に由来し、pole はギリシャ語 polos「軸・天の極」にさかのぼります。pole や polarity と同根で、ものを両極へ引き分けたり極性を帯びさせたりすることから、「分極化する」の意味が自然に理解できます。
Polarize comes from polar plus the verb ending -ize. Polar comes from pole, from Greek polos, meaning an axis or the end point of an axis. From the image of two opposite poles, the word came to mean making things split into two extremes or giving something opposite sides.
