rampantは古フランス語rampant、さらにramper「よじ登る・這う」に由来します。もとは獣が後ろ脚で立ち荒々しく迫る姿で、そこから抑えなく広がる「横行する」へ。関連語はrampage、rampancy。
Rampant comes from Old French rampant, from ramper, meaning "to climb" or "crawl." It first described an animal rearing up on its back legs, especially in heraldry. From that wild, forceful image, it later came to mean spreading without control. It is related to rampage and rampancy.
