show の語源・成り立ち Etymology
古英語 scēawian（見る・眺める）が語源で、ゲルマン祖語 *skawwōną（見る・注意する）に遡る。ドイツ語 schauen（見る）と同根。「見せること・見世物」が中心義で、showcase（陳列棚）やshowdown（対決＝手の内を見せ合う）に派生した。
The noun show developed from the verb show, which comes from Old English sceawian, “to look at, inspect, or observe.” The verb later acquired the causative sense “cause to be seen” or “present.” From this idea, the noun came to denote something displayed for viewing and then an organized entertainment, performance, or broadcast program. It is related historically to German schauen, “to look.”
