stoic はギリシャ語 Stoikos「柱廊の」に由来し、哲学者ゼノがアテネの彩色柱廊 stoa で教えたことから生まれました。語根 sto- は stoa「回廊」で、stoicism や stoa が同系。つまり「感情を抑える人」という意味は、もともと学派の“場所名”から来ています。
Stoic comes from Greek Stoikos, meaning "of the stoa," a public porch or colonnade. It was first the name of the philosophical school that taught in the Stoa Poikile in Athens. Only later did the school name become the everyday adjective for someone calm, self-controlled, and not easily shaken; related words include stoa and stoicism.
