Symbolism is the use of symbols to express deeper ideas, feelings, or meanings. It is common in literature, art, film, and religion, where a thing may represent more than its direct meaning. In a more specific sense, it can also refer to the Symbolist movement in art and literature.

「symbol＋-ism」で、symbol はラテン語 symbolum、さらにギリシャ語 symbolon にさかのぼります。symbolon は本来「投げ合わせるもの」で、割符の両片を合わせて真偽を確かめたことから、「象徴で表す考え方」= symbolism になりました。関連語は symbol, symbolic。

Symbol came through Latin from Greek symbolon, which originally meant something "thrown together," especially two matching pieces used to prove identity.
