vitriol「硫酸塩・礬水」からできた語で、その vitriol は中世ラテン語 vitriolum、さらにラテン語 vitrum「ガラス」にさかのぼる。ガラス状でしかも強く腐食する物質のイメージから、「人を焼くように辛辣な」という比喩的意味が生まれた。関連語は vitreous, vitrine。

Vitriol goes back to Medieval Latin vitriolum, from Latin vitrum meaning "glass," probably because of its glassy appearance.
