古英語 lōcian（目を向ける、見る）に由来。西ゲルマン語 *lōkōną に遡る。関連語：outlook（見晴らし）、overlook（見落とす）。原義は「意識的に視線を向ける」で、seeの無意識的な「見える」と異なり、能動的に注意を向ける動作を表す。
Look comes from Old English lōcian, meaning “to look, gaze, or observe,” and is related to other West Germanic forms. Its central idea has long been the intentional direction of one’s eyes or attention. This sense remains visible in compounds such as outlook and overlook, although those words have developed additional meanings of their own.
